Cicadas are incredibly fascinating insects that are often overlooked. Their loud call and deafening chorus evoke memories and nostalgia for many of hot, sunny summer days. Both annual and periodical cicadas coexist in a mutualistic relationship with trees, where they help prune old or dead branches off the tree in exchange for safe living and breeding habitat. Once the cicada dies, their body often decays at the base of trees where their nutrients and minerals help to enrich the soil and in turn, the tree and surrounding ecosystem. There are over 3,000 species of Cicadas, all of them with different physical characteristics and vocalizations. The year of 2021 is a special one in which a periodical brood has emerged in certain parts of the US in extraordinarily large numbers. “The Year of the Brood” is a celebration of their accomplishments, incredible existence and important contributions they make to an ecosystem.
