Teach Peace Prints is a small, woman-owned business led by Katama Murray, which focuses on printmaking and fiber techniques that utilize natural materials. Founded in 2020, Katama creates handmade products on paper and fabric using a variety of materials and processes, and continues to experiment with techniques while mindfully collaborating with the natural world. Tuning into the rhythm of the seasons and the plants that exist within those moments in time help to foster a deeper connection to local surroundings with respect, admiration, and care. Sharing these process-driven techniques to individuals and communities through educational opportunities is a way to further connect and inspire one another through making and learning.

Join us for a collaborative day of creating, community, herbal medicine making, and reveling in the beauty of mid September in Stonington, Maine with artists Maggie Ruth Haaland of Maggie Ruth Mends and Katama Murray of Teach Peace Prints! This multidisciplinary class will begin with herbal tea and refreshments, followed by an introduction to natural dyeing, eco printing, cyanotype printing, and book arts using locally harvested plants, both grown and foraged. All are welcome~limited spots available for adult participants.

Pre-Mordanted Kona Cotton Fat Quarter
$10.00

These mordanted (pre-treated) cotton fat quarters are great sizes for small projects or experimenting! Each piece measures approximately 18” x 21” (may be a tad smaller or larger in either direction), and has already been mordanted, which eliminates a time consuming and expensive step out of your artistic process. Mordanting is considered necessary by many in the natural dye community (myself included), to help absorb and retain natural pigments. Mordanted fabric helps to ensure that the natural pigment, no matter what process used to coax it out, will be more lightfast and washfast, essentially lasting longer over time, exposure to sunlight, and washing.

This cotton was mordanted with aluminum acetate and ferrous sulfate (iron), and can be used for eco printing (also known as bundle dyeing), natural dyeing, flower pounding, etc. Keep in mind that since it includes iron, it will darken or “sadden” natural colors - ie: say you’re trying to achieve a light pink from avocado pits when natural dyeing; you may end up with a darker pink or gray because iron is involved. This can either be beneficial or hindering of what you are hoping for color-wise! Each individual fat quarter will vary in it’s frayed edges as well as color. Discoloration and a vinegar scent is normal. If you are sensitive to iron, I recommend wearing gloves while working with this fabric. Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Eco printing is the process of bundling and steaming plants and food compost on mordanted (pre-treated) fabric or paper, which then allows the natural pigments to transfer and bond with the substrate. It is a fun, creative process in which experimentation, patience, and continual learning are key elements.
