weaving
In the autumn of 2022 I finally learned how to weave, and immediately fell in love with the process. Not only could a natural dyeing practice be integrated into this realm, but the way it slows everything down as you work brings calm to your heart. Inch by inch, row by row, you add to a weaving slowly and intimately. Your heart, mind, and body is involved with every step of the process, allowing you to fully enter a space of making. Using different types of yarn and thread with varying techniques, I wholeheartedly enjoy certain weaving techniques such as ikat resist and tapestry.
NATURALLY DYED WOOL YARN FOR TAPESTRY WEAVING - AUTUMN 2022
Natural dyestuffs mindfully foraged in Southern Indiana from late summer (August) to mid-Autumn (November).
The final tapestry weaving titled “Autumn at the Meadow” ultimately utilized wool dyed with Indigo (extract), Norway spruce (cones), Tickseed Sunflower, Cutch (extract), Smooth Sumac, Goldenrod, Henna (extract), Marigold, Black Walnut, and Chlorophyllin (extract). This abstracted landscape within this weaving was inspired by the blooming Goldenrod at Stone Head Preserve in Nashville, Indiana. The Crown Colony wool was mordanted with both Aluminum Potassium Sulfate (best for animal/protein fibers) and Ferrous Sulfate (Iron) to achieve varying shades from these plants and extracts.
