VERMONT ATLAS OF LIFE - LOGO DESIGN COMMISSION
SPRING 2020
In spring of 2020, I was commissioned to design a new logo for the Vermont Center for Ecostudies Vermont Atlas of Life project, with a mission to share and discover biodiversity knowledge in the state of Vermont. Through citizen science and the use of iNaturalist, they work with people from all over the world gathering important data about species in the state.
WORDS FROM THE VERMONT CENTER FOR ECOSTUDIES
How many species occur in Vermont? You’d think we’d know this for a small state steeped in a rich tradition of naturalists. But, the simple answer is, no one really knows. Introducing the Vermont Atlas of Life project at iNaturalist. Help us discover, map and monitor life across Vermont. Join our growing community of citizen naturalists from around the Green Mountain State in discovering and sharing observations of Vermont life. Your observations can be turned into research-grade, citizen science data that will help us discover, track and ultimately conserve our natural heritage.
CAN YOU IDENTIFY ALL THE SPECIES?
We chose 39 species to include in the graphic. Some are favorites, some iconic, others have neat conservation stories. How many can you identify? Click on the map to see a larger image and when you’ve written down all your answers, no cheating! Visit the key to see how you did: http://val.vtecostudies.org/about/species-names/
ABOUT THE DESIGN
The VAL team worked with artist Katama Murray to create this eye-catching design to raise awareness and some funds for the Vermont Atlas of Life. Katama created each drawing using an archival pen, and then transformed them digitally to make the entire composition into the shape of the wonderful state of Vermont. You and your friends and family will look snazzy, support citizen science, and help spread the word for biodiversity conservation with these unique shirts.
